Tribes 2 - Vehicles

Only light armoured and medium armoured players can take control of a vehicle. Medium armoured players can pilot / drive all vehicles except for the Grav Cycle and as long as they do not have a portable station on their back.

All vehicles are bought via the vehicle station (pictured left). Here you'll have access to seven vehicles.

How to buy a vehicle
1 - Stand on the Vehicle pad and the buy screen will appear.
2 - Select a vehicle and press buy. (Note the x remaining box. If there are 0 left you can't order that type of vehicle).
3 - The vehicle will slowly appear on the main pad. Once its fully formed you'll be transported to the pilot seat.

When you are in a vehicle you'll see the display change. In the example left you can see 3 red dots representing the pilot, bombardier, and the tail gunner. These are useful because your view is limited once you are in a vehicle and you won't necessarily be able to see if anyone is in the seat behind you.

Also on the display is shown the vehicles speed (162KPH in this case). Vehicle energy level (Blue bar). Height in the air (126 M In this case) and the Hull integrity (Yellow bar). You'll also see a orange bar on the bomber and tank HUD only. This is your weapon energy. Other vehicles have their weapons and vehicle energy all tied together. Firing a vehicle's weapons, using its boosters, and being shot at (causing the shields to absorb the damage) will result in the vehicle's energy being used up, although it will slowly recharge over time.

Experienced players will try and keep some energy for the shields when near an enemies location, because it's a lot easier to move away and recharge then it is to be blown up. As a vehicle takes damage it will show signs, including production of black smoke.

Tips

If your flying machine is nearly destroyed fly it at an enemy pulse sensor or defence turret and jump out at the last minute. The vehicle will ram the object and cause it some damage. Better still if you are almost dead stay in the vehicle and guide it into the object or an enemy player to ram full them at speed!

There is a set number of each vehicle type allowed in anyone game. Leaving vehicles lying around is not a good idea, and they have to be blown up to allow the creation of new vehicles. If a vehicle is left in the open and alone for to long (except for the mobile base) it will disappear.

Speed boosts
Flying vehicles can be given a boost of speed. If you do not move and press your jet button (default mouse 2), the vehicle will move directly upwards. This is useful if you want to hover somewhere or gain a lot of height quickly. If you press forward and boost the vehicles will accelerate faster, however note this will mean you have less energy for the shields and weapons!

How to avoid missiles
Flares will intercept missiles if thrown at the right time, but it is possible to also avoid them with a bit of skill. When a missile is locked on flying in a straight line will result in it hitting you at some point, so why not head to wards a hill / mountain and tightly fly around it? This will case the chasing missile to hit the mountain and explode leaving you safe. When a missile has a lock on you, try and fly around any object tightly and 9 times out of 10 you'll escape, although if the missile is fired close by or there's more than one, you will get hit at some point.

Tribal road kill
Always remember you can run people over or fly into them at any time :).

Shrike Fighter

Crew: 1 pilot
Speed: Fast
Armour: Light
Shields: Weak
Firepower: Twin plasma guns

Shrike fighters may have weak shields, they are however very agile allowing skilled pilots to perform daring maneuvers to avoid enemy gun fire whilst attacking their targets. The other vehicles in the game are easily harassed by Shrike fighters, and along with missile launchers are the next best thing to down a enemy bomber, and of course a packed transport before it becomes a threat :).

Always be on the look out for enemy Shrikes where you'll soon end up in a dog fight situation. Also these fighters make excellent escape vehicles for flag carriers.

Thundersword Bomber

Crew: 1 pilot, 1 bombardier, 1 tail gunner
Speed: Average
Armour: Medium
Shields: Average
Firepower: Under belly turret (very weak), Bombs.

A three man crew is needed to really make full use of the bomber. This is the vehicle requiring a lot of skill and coordination between three players.

Pilots Job: Not only to fly to the target, but to approach it where he expects the least defence (example: From behind the base). If the pilot uses energy to boost the vehicle it will have less energy for the shields. Always keep an eye on the vehicle's energy status.
Bombardiers Job: The belly turret is not worth using, and the energy is best saved for the pilot to use or to keep the shield power topped up. The bombardier can target an area he wants the pilot to bomb. To do this select the laser pointer and keep it pointed at the target. After a few seconds it will register and a red line will appear directly up out of the location where on top will be a circle and distance information. Now if the pilot heads towards this circle and you drop your bombs as you near the red line, you'll drop far more bombs than you would normally (due to the targetting giving the pilot the ideal height).
Tail Gunners Job: Simply, protection. Make sure you have flare grenades. These will intercept the enemy missile fire. Also be ready to fire at enemy shrike flyers who might appear.

How to make a successful bombing run

  1. Pilot: Ensure energy bar is full and fly over the base. If possible ease off the forward key and let the momentum carry you. Basically you'll be slowing down. This allows the bombardier to drop far more bombs than he would otherwise be able to in a quick rush over the enemy base. It does however mean you will be in the enemy firing line for longer. If they have good defences you might only be able to do quick passes, but even then there should be enough bombs dropped to cause damage.
  2. Bombardier: keep an eye on the red target on the ground just below the bomber. This is your only confirmed target. Although with your own eyes it may appear the bomber is not anywhere near the base due to the speed and angle the bomber is coming in from you have to trust only the red target. When it's over enemy base start pressing fire. When the target comes off the base (by then the bomber might only be half way over the base) stop firing because any bombs you drop now will be wasted.
  3. Tailgunner: Always have flares with you, and if possible a repair pack. This way you can repair the bomber in mid air, which is always handy.

Havoc Heavy Transport

Crew: 1 pilot, 4 passengers, 1 tail gunner
Speed: Slow
Armour: Medium
Shields: Strong
Firepower: N/A

The transport is the best way to get heavy armoured players and others into the enemy base. A large attack squad will always cause a lot more hassle for the enemy than the odd wave of attacks. Be careful though as this transport is very easy to topple over with a well aimed spinfusor shot or missile.

Wildcat Grav Cycle

Crew: 1 driver
Speed: Fast
Armour: Medium
Shields: Weak
Firepower: N/A

It takes a few goes to get used to, because it's not easy to move side ways unless you stop pressing the forward key. The Grav Cycle is very fast and can avoid most gun fire, even missiles if it can move between objects. Useful to reach the enemy base in quick time, and it makes an excellent escape vehicle for a flag carrier to use.

Beowulf Assault Vehicle

Crew: 1 driver, 1 gunner
Speed: Average
Armour: Medium
Shields: Strong
Firepower: Plasma Cannons, Twin chain guns

Good shields and speed, together with a reasonable amount of protection from the vehicle's armour, the assault vehicle makes for a good attack vehicle. When attacking try not to wander into the enemy base where their defences will chew you up. Instead stay back and lob mortars into it. This will ensure a response from the enemy players who you can then turn your attention to. Run them over. Blow them up... A player on the ground will have a hard time trying to destroy this vehicle alone, unless they use heavy weapons like missile launchers and stay away from the vehicles path.

Jericho Mobile Point Base

Crew: 1 driver
Speed: Slow
Armour: Medium
Shields: Strong
Firepower: Missile Turret

With this vehicle you can set up a forward base! Each team will only get one of these, and if placed at the mid way point on the map, (with security from small deployable turrets) it can supply teammates thanks to the inventory station located on the back. It also has a missile turret a built in for added protection.

To deploy the base make sure you stop on flat ground. Then jump out and it will set itself up.
