Tribes 2 - Playing Tribes 2 Part 2
 |
|
|
Default Keys: A to enhance, T to cycle through magnification levels. You can either select a magnification level and then enhance what you're looking at, or you can press the enhance button and cycle through to find the magnification level that looks best.
By using the image enhancer you can zoom in to see the whites of the enemies eyes! Well almost :).
The image enhancer is useful because it allows you to aim right at the enemies head. Shots to the head cause more damage than body shots, and there's nothing like zooming in and picking an enemy off halfway across the battlefield :)
|
Deployables and packs allow players to carry extra items. All Deployables and packs are carried on a player's back, so you'll have to choose between carrying a deployable item or a pack. You can't have both.
You can get them at inventory stations or off dead players, who will drop their packs once killed. If you see someone die and you're pack-less, go and grab it! :)
Only assault and juggernaut armoured players can carry a portable inventory, ammo station or turret.
Deployables are used for a range of reasons. You can pick one up and dump it somewhere and then get another one. However, the packs have to be used at all times, unless you trade one in for another. To use a pack or deployable press 'R', however some packs like the ammo pack are in constant use and don't need to be activated.
For more details on: The deployables please click
here, The packs details on the packs click
here.
Probably the most commonly asked question is "How do you repair?". First you're going to need to get your hands on a repair pack.
 |
You'll find these repair packs dotted around your bases. If you don't already have a pack, walk over to a repair pack and press the 'R' key to active it. To repair something walk up to a damaged player, vehicle or piece of equipment and press fire. You'll see the energy / armour state of what you're repairing slowly improve.
Repair packs can also be bought from inventory stations.
|
 |
What can be repaired?
Inventory stations, ammo stations, command stations, base defences, team mates, generators, vehicles, portable turrets, stations and deployable items.
Base defences and base ammo / inventory / command stations don't disappear once they are destroyed. A small stump will be left. This allows you to repair them.
Repairing may seem boring, but think about it carefully. Without repairing your stations the enemy will destroy them all and soon all your team will be walking around with just light armour and basic weapons, whilst the enemy are using everything including the kitchen sink! Keeping your defences, stations, and vehicle pads repaired has to be done at all times, or the enemy will have the upper hand. Keep a special eye out for your generators and solar panels - which supply power to base defences and stations.
|
If there wasn't enough to do already, you also have vehicles to play with!
Ground vehicles:
Wildcat - Grav Cycle
Beowulf - Assault Vehicle
Jericho - Mobile Assault Base
|
Turbo Gravs (air vehicles):
Shrike - Flyer
Thundersword - Bomber
Havoc - Heavy Bomber
|
|
 |
There's quite a lot of information regarding the vehicles, which I've grouped together on this page
here.
 |
You can drop weapons by pressing CTRL + W. This is useful if you want to pick up another player's discarded weapon. Other items you can drop include: Packs (CTRL + R), Flags (CTRL + F), and Deployables (CTRL + R).
In the picture (left) the player has dropped her Jammer pack and disc launcher weapon.

Tribes 2 has so many team options it's unbelievable. It's easy for new players to become lost in the number of options available, but given time you'll have everything sussed out.
Once you've got your head round how to play Tribes 2, the next challenge is working with a team that may well be formed from complete strangers. Not everyone is used to playing as part of a team. You'll get players who will only collect weapons and go for the enemy flag or objective - without thinking of the team or seeing the 'bigger picture'. They just see themselves and the enemy, and go out to kill them. This is not necessarily a bad thing, unless everyone on the team is doing that and no one is defending your team objectives or setting up defences. Just like football you need offence and defence.
|
If you're having trouble finding your place in a Tribes 2 team, then try picking up two or three roles from the list below and sticking with them. This will save you running around like a headless chicken! It will also help you focus, and you'll be able to enjoy Tribes 2 from the start.

|
| Defender |
- Base Defence Roam around and keep your eye's peeled. 1. Deployer (Deploy sensors and turrets - replace them when needed). Stay around the base. 2. On guard waiting (defending base / objectives). If the enemy get the objective (for example, your flag) chase after them.
- Repair Duty Repair anything that's damaged. Concentrate on key areas, such as enerators (you also get points for doing this), and try to block enemies who enter your base.
|
| Attack |
- Target enemy generators and defences Disrupt the enemy and generally piss them off :)
- Target Flag / the Objectives Aim to grab the game objective.
- Target Sensors and Stations Knock them out to slow the enemy down.
|
| Driiver / Pilot |
- Drive or pilot team mates around, or use a single seater vehicle and practice driving / flying skills. Note: You will want to read up about vehicles on the vehicle section here first to learn the basics of what they can do.
|
| Gunner / Bombardier / Tail Gunner |
- Take control of the weapons on board a vehicle and have a play. Note: You will want to read up about vehicles on the vehicle section here first to learn the basics of what they can do.
|
| Support |
- Flag Carrier Hang around half way on the map to support the flag carriers getaway.
- Team Mates / Vehicles Bombers & Transports can be harassed by enemy Shrike flyers so jump into a vehicle and provide support. Also follow any team mates who are walking / jetting towards the enemy base. Give them backup.
