Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Guide: MIRC
STEP 1: This is a quick guide to getting you up and running with MIRC. First up you
will need the program. You can find an extensive list here:
http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Once you have mirc installed it's time to walk you through the options. mIRC
may look like a big program, but when broken down you'll see it's easy to get
used to.

OPTIONS SCREEN
STEP 2: Fill in the
blanks that appear on the options screen (pictured above) and next...

Select the Servers tap, entering "QuakeNet" from the IRC
network list and IRC Server "QuakeNet: EU, UK, London" as shown above.
Upon connecting a new box will pop up in front of you called the
'mIRC channels folder' This has a huge list of default 'channels'
A channel on irc can be thought of as a room. In a channel
people will be a listed. To see this you have to 'join' a channel. Now before
joining the #freddyshouse channel you have one more step to work through.
STEP 3: Before joining #freddyshouse you have to register free
with the Q bot.
Need to register with Q? Follow the
instructions belowA: You Type: /MSG Q HELLO
*If Q Replies about Registering, follow
the instructions below. If Q did not reply about registering go to part
B.
You Type: /msg Q HELLO your@emailaddress your@emailaddress
Q Reply = -Q- Hello, "YourUserName". A new user account has been created
for you, with nick "YourUserName".
-Q- OK, Your login information has been sent to "Your@EmailAddress".
please check your email for further instructions.
Check your email and read it.
To change your password type: /MSG Q NEWPASS oldpassword newpassword newpassword
Q Reply: -Q- OK, password changed.
B: You Type: /MSG Q HELLO
**If
Q Reply = -Q- Someone's already registered with that nick!
-Q- If it's YOUR nick type: /msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org AUTH nick password
If it's not your Nick (i.e name), change your name to something else, or like in my case "SAS" I had to
change to SAS--.
Only letters, numbers and "-" symbols are allowed in names. Next type:
/MSG Q HELLO and if the name is not in use you'll be asked the
following...
***If
Q Reply = -Q- You forgot to type your email address.
-Q- /MSG Q HELLO your@emailaddress your@emailaddress
-Q- Basic instructions and your login information for your new account
will be mailed to the email address you supply, so make sure it's valid.
How to auth with Q upon joining quakenet IRC
You Type: /msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org AUTH nick password
Q Reply = -Q- AUTH'd successfully.
STEP 4: To save yourself manually logging into Q, in MIRC press
the
icon and select
"Options" and then press the "perform" button as pictured below.
Next enter the details shown in the image below (be sure to
replace user and password with your details!). Once done,
each time you join Quakenet IRC you will automatically login and join #freddyshouse.
Easy :). Note the //mode $me +x hits your IP address from other irc
users. Think of it as a nice free security feature.

STEP 4: In the screenshot below (taken from #freddyshouse channel) you
can see everyone listed to the right. Some names have symbols next to them.
@ = Op (operator): This means the users have full control over
the channel. They can change the topic (bar that appears at the top of mirc,
and do other things that a normal user can't do.
+ = Voice: If a room is moderated (some rooms stop people
talking unless they have a + or @). Moderated rooms like this are rare, and a
+ is also generally used to indicate the user is associated with that channel.

Anything typed in the box below will appear to everyone in the
channel. Now that your in IRC you will want to look closely at mirc's options...
Click the
icon to access the options screen, which is pictured at the top of the page.
Now all the options are clearly labelled. It's just a case of
going into each menu and seeing if you want an option on/off. Customizing mIRC
to your own tastes will ensure you enjoy it more.
Other options like for changing the font that is displayed, can
be found under the 'Tools'.
If
you need any more help post in the FreddysHouse Guides Forum here
Enjoy!
