Operation Flashpoint - Mission Briefing

The Briefing Screen allows you to see the mission map and your field organiser.  This military filofax  outlines your objectives.  You can head back to the map screen at any time by pressing M.   A word of warning though,  whilst you're looking at the map during a mission, time in the game carries on as normal -  meaning you can be shot!   So it's a good idea to find a secure location before checking your map.

On the map

You'll see a number of things:

  • Anything red (Soviet) =  Shaded areas represent enemy zones, and red arrows show the direction they will be pushing forward.

  • Anything green (NATO) = Shaded areas represent friendly zones, and green arrows show the direction they will be pushing forward.

  • Red Crosshairs = Notes. By clicking on the map you can add your own notes and label them.

  • Targets = Colours represent their side, but in some cases it might not be possible to identify the target and these will show up as question mark icons. Any vehicles that move out of sight will show up as a yellow icon that fades slowly to indicate the last known location.

  • Large red circle = This indicates you, with the line pointing in the direction you're facing. Handy if your moving while looking at the map.

  • Small circles with a line sticking out of them = Troops.   The line indicates the direction they're facing, whilst the colour denotes their affiliation.  (Which side they're on!)

  • Vehicles =  These will be displayed as small icons of the vehicle in question.

Using the map

  • Right click and hold to drag yourself across the map quickly.

  • Use the + / - Keys (far right of keyboard) to zoom in and out of the map. If you have a mouse with a wheel this can also be used.

The field organiser
This is accessible at all times - in the briefing room and in the thick of  game.   However only the briefing room at the start of the mission gives you unlimited time to view what is contained within it.  You can't bury your head in a book for too long in a combat situation, as obviously, you risk getting shot!

- Plan: Displays  the mission objectives. Clicking any of the coloured links will move the map view to that point on the map.   Also note the black marks.  These will change to a green tick if completed, or to a red cross if failed.   In some missions it maybe impossible to complete all objectives, but the overall mission may be successful.

Always remember you do not have to stick to the rules laid out by the plan.  As in real life, the best laid plans of mice and men...   In a few cases it will make sense to use your own judgment and take a different route to your objective to avoid enemy forces.

- Notes:  Can give some clues on the mission ahead.

- Gear: View the gear that each of the men in your group is wearing (click here for an example).  In some missions it's also possible to change parts of the default gear by double clicking on a piece of equipment.  This is useful if you want to carry extra ammo, or change weapons completely.  To view information on any piece of gear click the "i" icon below it.

For full details on the weapons and other gear available in the game click here.

- Group: This will list the men in your squad, including rank and full name.

Other Tools

When you're in the game, and you head back to the map screen, you'll see some additional tools.

By double clicking the right hand corner on anything resting on top of the map it will cause it to maximize / minimize, stopping it obscuring the map from your view.  You can also move items around by right clicking and dragging them across the screen.

  • Compass:  Shows the direction you're currently facing.
  • Watch: Displays the current mission time.
  • Radio:  This will be used by you to issue commands to other squads apart from your own.
