Advanced Configuring
Of course there is other ways to edit your config. All changes you make will be held in a file called config.cfg. This can be located in your halflife/cstrike/ Directory and, loaded up in notepad. This allows you to edit it, like you would any other text document.

Sample taken from my CS config:
...
bind "i" "showbriefing"
bind "m" "chooseteam"
bind "n" "buyequip"
bind "q" "nightvision"
bind "r" "+reload"
...

The sample above shows the kind of thing you'll be faced with. It's easier to edit your config via the half-life menu (Configuration > Controls), but you may want to add more to your config and this is where editing via notepad is the way to go.

Other things you may want add in your config
NOTE: These can be entered in via the console, which can be seen by pressing the ` key when in a game of CS. Add a / when entering commands this way. So command cl_hidefrags 0 would be entered in the console as  /cl_hidefrags 0.

cl_hidefrags 0 = Allows you to see all the scores, for every player. There is an option in the Halflife menus to change this setting, but it does not always work. However this will everytime if placed in your config :).

+nvgadjust and -nvadjust = These adjust the brightness of the night vision goggles.

hud_centerid 1 = The default is hud_centerid 0. This means when you place your crosshair on someone in the game there name + health status appears in the lower left of your screen. Set to 1 (on) this makes that info appear in the centre of your screen.

setinfo vgui_menus 0 = To disable the attractive vgui menus (can see them here.).

Morpheus's Advanced Config (Version 2)
If your new to CS then use your own config for the time being. This config is best left to players who are confident with CS and know how configs work.

Morpheus has spent a lot of time setting up his config, and it shows :). Everything is labelled and there are a few text documents in there to help guide you through the config. This is a top class config and is defiantly worth a look. You can download it here: CixCS-Configv2.zip  (Please make sure you backup your config before using any custom configs)

Other configs can be found in the configs section. However these are best left though until you have played a few games of CS.
