Counter Strike - Getting Started...

So what do you need to play this classic MOD? (This is the boring bit
where you check everything is up to date :))
Please note:
Counter-Strike can be bought as a stand alone game,
or as a mod (modification) to the game Half-Life where Counter-Strike is
an extension to the game.
Each of these files will require you to have a Gamespy id.
These are free and you'll be taken through the process once you click on
the file you wish to download. Local versions of these patches will be on FreddysHouse as soon as
possible.
-
1. Half-life CD - Buy this from
your local store or you may have this knocking about the house
somewhere.
If you
have made a fresh install of Half-life then you'll need the full patches
to update your game to the latest versions:
Full Half-Life Patch Download to version 1.1.1.0 (82MB).
Full CS Patch Download
to version 1.5
(121.3MB).
(Version 1.6 of CS is downloaded with steam. See
below for details)
OR
-
2.
Half-life Counter-Strike / Generations / Platinum / Adrenaline packs -
Buy these from your
local store and it will include the full version of CS version 1.0!
You'll then need to grab this patch:
Full CS Retail Download to version 1.5 (115MB).
(Version 1.6 of CS is downloaded with steam. See below for more details)
Some people will say 100MB+ will take ages to download, but I
assure you
it's worth every MegaByte.
AND
- Steam Client - To get version
CS 1.6 and future updates you will need the steam client. This also doubles
up as a server browser and allows you to save friends to a buddy list
and a whole lot more!
Steam Client
Download (595KB)
- Servers - Of course you'll need
somewhere to play and because CS has a huge following servers are not
in short supply :). You can find details about finding servers within
the Server Section.
Once you are all patched up, and have joined a CS server to test your
connection to ensure everything is running smoothly. The next step is
understanding how the game works...
